An Introduction to the Research Center of Contemporary Religious Thought

After encountering the complex problems of the contemporary world (problems which were followed by dogmatic and illogical mental tendencies on the one hand, and iconoclastic and irreligious mental interests on the other), a group of learned people and thinkers and possessed of higher academic education in seminary who had gradually came across in the Islamic Republic of Iran, turned to Reformist Islam in order to promote religious thinking and adjust it with the modern world. In order to avoid scattered mental efforts devoid of long-term goals, and to avoid research projects without strategies and guidelines, and given the necessity of ____having regular micro and macro plans in cultural and scientific efforts, this group decided to perform their mental, scientific, and cultural affairs in a team in a scientific-research institution. Hence, the research center of contemporary religious thought, which will be simply called “research center” from now on, started its unofficial activities in early 2000s and received its certificate from the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology in 2016 as “Contemporary Religious Thought Research Team”. The research center is a private and independent institution and is not affiliated with any official or unofficial organization.  Not only is the research center primarily concerned with contemplating on the relationship between religion and religious knowledge with other new human knowledge, but given the vast and deep developments in all areas of individual and social life, it is also concerned with improving and promoting religious perception.
The general approach of the research center is based on reformism in religious and Islamic texts. By believing in the importance of religious teachings, it attempts to present a new formation of religious concepts which is commensurate with the contingencies of the new era. Therefore, considering the two-faceted scientific position that they hold, Reformist Muslims want to play a constructive role as a bridge between seminary and university.  Reformist Islam is an intermediary path between the two extremes of open-minded people and the traditional ones and by believing in the capacity of Islamic-Iranian tradition and by considering the achievements and requirements of the modern world, it attempts to play a role in different scientific fields in order to achieve a model which is commensurate with the needs of the country.  Reformist Islam holds great importance for mental and cultural interaction in national, regional and international levels and for this matter, attempts to expand its relationship with other scientific and cultural centers both inside and outside the country.
The most important fields of study of the research center include:

1. Studying the theoretical challenges of Islamic thought in the realm of theories
2. Studying the fundamental changes in the world of Islam and outside Islam
3. Studying modern approaches in the field of philosophy, theology and jurisprudence in the Shia world
4. Studying the theoretical links between mental, mystic, scientific and religious viewpoints
5. Studying the emergence process of religious-theoretical changes in the social and historical life
6. Studying the latest viewpoints of Reformist Muslims in the Islamic Republic of Iran

Three scientific committees entitled “Islam and Human Rights”, “The principles of Religious Thought”, and “Islam and Government” are currently working and performing research in order to achieve the aforementioned goals. Over forty people are performing various scientific-research activities within these three committees which consist of expert professors in seminary and university knowledge. By inviting seminary and university experts, this research center has been able to gather a group of concerned professors who are familiar with seminary and university knowledge to tackle the scientific and research needs of the country.

The research center pays considerable attention to the scientific interaction between universities, research centers, and the scientists both inside and outside the country, especially to the scientific centers of the world of Islam in the field of new theories and fundamental research. So far, a number of different scientific and ____executive institutions have shown their willingness to cooperate with this group. For greater success, new achievements and the promotion of individual and social life of the contemporary humans, the research center attempts to develop its scientific and research activities while at the same time emphasizing on preserving .Islamic values and principles.
